Setting Up Your Facebook Account       back to facebook home

Your Facebook account is free and has two requirements. First you must be over thirteen years of age and second you must have a working email address. Follow these easy steps to set up your account.

  1. Using your browser go to www.facebook.com.

  2. Fill out all the fields on the Sign Up page. See the explanation of the fields below.

    • First and Last Name – Facebook expects you to fill out your real name. If you use fake information headhunters and old college buddies will not be able to find you. However, if you are only using it to communicate with family and present friends you can use a nick name and let them know what it is. Facebook uses computer programs and real people to weed out fictitious registration information, so don’t use celebrity names or others names that might be interpreted as a fake.
    • Your Email – As mentioned above you need a working email address. You might want to get an email account specifically for Facebook. You can do this for free at yahoo.com, google.com or hotmail.com.
    • Password – Make up a password that is easy to remember. It can be 6 characters or longer. Use capital letters and numbers to make it more secure. Write it down in a safe place so you won’t forget it.
    • I am – Select your gender
    • Birthday - Facebook asks all users to provide their real date of birth. This encourages authenticity and helps provide age-appropriate access to content. You will be able to hide this information from your profile if you wish. The Facebook Privacy Policy governs the use of this information.

  3. Click the Sign Up button

When you see this window type the letters you see in the first box into the second box. This proves to Facebook that you are a real person and not a program trying to create fake accounts. If you can’t read the letters click the link above the first box to “Try different words”.

  4. Click the Sign Up button
  5. Skip the next three steps
